Naturalization / Citizenship

Naturalization is the process in which a foreign citizen becomes a U.S. citizen. Most applications for U.S. citizenship are submitted by those with permanent residency for five years (three years if the permanent residency is through marriage), adopted children, and children born with a U.S. citizen parent. Those who apply based on permanent residency must also show "good moral character" as of 2025.

Permanent Residency (Green Card)

The United States favors family relationships (spouses, parents and siblings of a U.S. citizen may all qualify), there are multiple options to adjust from a work visa to permanent residency as well.

Work/Employment

Over 20 types of visas are available for those who wish to work in the United States. While most are temporary, others allow for permanent residency. The most appropriate type of work visa will depend on the job’s responsibilities, education / experience level, and (especially) long term goals. Most work visas also require a sponsor to petition first, and prohibit changing jobs (or working two jobs) without an additional petition.

Student/Exchange Visas

Those who wish to study in the United States may use F (academic), M (vocational) and J (cultural exchange) visas. These require proof of admission by an accredited program and financial support. Detailed planning is essential, and spouses/dependents may join.

(https://studyinthestates.dhs.gov/school-search, https://j1visa.state.gov/participants/how-to-apply/sponsor-search/). Validate the school before choosing this path, as several online schools based in the US mislead foreign students on their accreditation.

Exchange visas (J) are also a popular method for short-term learning in the US.

Specialty Visas

Several visas are immediately available for large investors, world-renown celebrities, athletes, musicians, and those with skills that advance national interests. These visas may be temporary or offer a path to permanent residency depending on your plans.
